The Michigan House of Representatives today adopted a resolution introduced by state Rep. Josh Schriver to honor the election of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV as the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and the first American ever chosen as pope.
House Resolution 160, offered by Schriver and passed on the House floor September 4, extends the Legislature’s congratulations to Pope Leo XIV and highlights the historic nature of his election.
“Today, the Michigan House recognized a truly historic moment, not just for American Catholics but for people of faith across the globe,” Schriver said. “Pope Leo XIV is the first American to be elected to this honored role, and his leadership brings hope, unity, and inspiration. I am honored to have led this resolution on behalf of the people of Michigan.”
The resolution commends the pope’s spiritual mission and offers the state’s prayers and best wishes as he begins his service to the Catholic Church and the world.
“The Catholic Church is a big part of our community, and this is a monumental event,” Schriver said. “But whether Catholic or not, we can all appreciate the significance of this milestone. This is a big moment for American Catholics and the history of the church, and we all extend our deepest respect and congratulations to Pope Leo XIV.”
