Rep. John Damoose of Harbor Springs issued the following statement after the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy approved Enbridge Energy’s application for certain permits required to build a utility tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac:
“I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again – the existing Line 5 pipeline is too important to abandon without a viable replacement ready to go. I am hopeful this permit approval from the Whitmer administration signals that the governor is beginning to understand that as well. It’s a positive step in the right direction.
“Our Northern Michigan homes and businesses need the fuel Line 5 delivers every day – and in the long run, we need this safe, state-of-the-art underground tunnel to become a reality. As EGLE said in its announcement – this new tunnel can be built in compliance with Michigan’s environmental laws. So let’s stop the political posturing and get this thing built.”
