Rep. Damoose: Governor’s lifting of restaurant ban is long overdue and tough restrictions remain, but it’s a step in the right direction
RELEASE|January 22, 2021

Rep. John Damoose of Harbor Springs today issued the following statement after Gov. Whitmer announced indoor restaurant dining will resume Feb. 1 with capacity limits and curfews:

“I was going to say the governor’s announcement is a day late and a dollar short – but it’s actually several weeks late, and several million dollars short for our suffering restaurant workers and their families. This decision is long overdue, and it does not go far enough fast enough – 25 percent capacity basically means ‘closed’ for many restaurants, and a curfew seems offensive for grown adults. But the governor’s announcement is a welcome start and a step in the right direction.

“I had called on the governor to safely reopen restaurants, and now we do see some movement. I am hopeful it’s a sign the governor is starting to listen to the people of Michigan who are struggling because of her strictest-in-the-nation COVID orders. She hasn’t done much listening in the past year.

“I encourage everyone in Michigan who is able to safely dine-in at their favorite restaurant the week of Feb. 1. We must show our hardworking friends and neighbors they are valued and appreciated, particularly after all the sacrifices they have been forced to endure in the past year.”
